Spring News: What you need to know about the "Plant of Immortality"

It's always funny to me that every article I write on SKIN UP or product review I read, Aloe is the least discussed, most overlooked ingredient in cosmetics. Especially when partnered up with more recent, news-making ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid. Yet Aloe Vera is a fantastically powerful little botanical. We all know it's amazing on sunburn (I can't remember a summer without it!), but what can it really do for our skin?

The plant known to Ancient Egyptians as "the plant of immortality" - it's been used medicinally for centuries. We, especially if you're a sun lover as I am, recognize it more in a gel form and see it in various restorative cosmetic products. But we have it in SKIN UP's Hydrating Elixir for a few more reasons, as this wonderful little plant does much more than soothe irritated skin.

1. Aloe acts as a moisturizer.

Aloe moisturizes the skin without feeling heavy or greasy - and is great for anyone with oily or conbination skin. For those who use makeup, especially mineral-based make-up, Aloe acts as a moisturizing primer and is great for the face before applying makeup to prevent skin drying. For men: Aloe can be used as an aftershave treatment as its healing properties can treat small cuts caused by shaving. This rolls over to other skin comprimizing irritations - it helps soothe with wind and razor burn, over-exfoliation, and skin recovering from medical treatments such as peels.

2: Aloe has important antibacterial and antioxidant properties.

According to a journal in the US National Library of Medicine
National Institutes of Health, Aloe contains powerful antioxidants, which belong to a large family of substances known as polyphenols (2).These polyphenols, along with several other compounds in Aloe, can help inhibit the growth of certain bacteria that can cause infections in humans (2).

So what does this mean for your skin?

3: It treats acne.

These antibacterial and antioxidant properties do wonders for acne-prone skin, especially when it's hormone related as we age. Aloe Vera contains two hormones: Auxin and Gibberellins. These two hormones provide wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce skin inflammation. Giberellin in Aloe Vera acts as a growth hormone stimulating the growth of new cells. It allows the skin to heal quickly and naturally with minimal scarring.

Aloe is soothing and can reduce skin inflammations, blistering and itchiness, while helping the skin to heal more rapidly. Additionally, in Ayurvedic medicine, Aloe is used to effectively heal chronic skin problems like acne, as well as psoriasis and eczema.

4. It fights the signs of aging.

As we age, everyone begins to worry about the appearance of fine lines and the loss of elasticity in their skin. Aloe leaves contain a plethora of antioxidants including, beta carotene, vitamin C and E that can help improve the skin's natural firmness and keep the skin hydrated. In one study of 30 women over the age of 45, topical application of the gel was shown to increase collagen production and improve skin elasticity over a 90-day period (16).

5. It lessens the visibility of stretch marks.

I wish I had known this little bit of information when I was carrying our little ones! The skin is like one big piece of elastic that’ll expand and contract as needed to accommodate growth. But if the skin stretches too far, too fast (due to pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss) the elasticity of the skin can be damaged. That’s what leaves those unsightly stretch marks. These marks appear due to minor tears in the layers of the skin caused by sudden and excessive stretching. Aloe vera can help hide these stretch marks by healing these wounds.

Skin soothing Aloe is as versatile as our Hydrating Elixirs are!

We have Aloe in our Elixirs because it's been proven, time and time again, to be extraordinarily important for overall skin health and appearance. So as we move into the spring and summer months (and months of bi-polar, unpredictable weather if you're anywhere seasonal!), you'll be glad to have the high quality Aloe you find in SKIN UP's misted Hydrating Elixirs. With every 10 second application you're getting a weightless dose of skin soothing aloe - in addition to the moisture magnet, Hyaluronic Acid and potent antioxidants Lipoic Acid and CoEnzyme Q10. SKIN UP is an amazing way to deliver this little miracle botanical to your skin without compromizing the application by bacteria transferred from your hands, especially if you have acne prone skin like mine.
